Meticulous and industrious, Bonn Observatory director Friedrich W. Telescopes were revealing stars by the hundreds of thousands, every one of them an individual crying out for its own identity. Herculean Listsīy the 19th century all these naming efforts were falling far short of the mushrooming need. Roman letters were applied all over the sky by various star mappers from Bayer on, but in the northern sky they have largely passed out of use. So in far-southern constellations one often encounters upper- and lower-case Roman letters, such as g Carinae and L 2 Puppis. Nobody got around to numbering stars farther south than could be seen from England. Such confusing designations are best swept under the rug, never to be used. Thus the star 30 Monocerotis is today considered to be in Hydra, and 49 Serpentis is in Hercules. When the constellation borders were formalized in 1930, a number of Flamsteed stars found themselves stranded in exile. The highest Flamsteed number within any constellation is held by 140 Tauri. In all, 2,682 stars received Flamsteed numbers. For instance, 80 Virginis is east of 79 Virginis and west of 81 Virginis (at least in the coordinate system Flamsteed used - the equinox-1725 system - which still matches today's celestial east and west pretty well).Īll bright stars were numbered whether they had a Greek letter or not, which is why Alpha Lyrae is also 3 Lyrae. Around 1712 John Flamsteed, England's Astronomer Royal, began numbering stars in each constellation from west to east in order of right ascension - a big help when looking for a star on a map. But as more and more stars needed names because of better sky surveys, astronomers adopted numbers. Sometimes one letter is used repeatedly with superscripts to cover several adjacent stars. There are swarms of stars per constellation but only 24 Greek letters. Sooner or later everyone who deals with star names has to sit down and learn the Greek letters (listed below) and the genitives of the 88 constellation names (listed in the back of most astronomy handbooks). Back when most educated people knew Latin and Greek this phrasing flowed off the tongue naturally, but today it's many skywatchers' first exposure to the Greek alphabet and Latin declensions. They are used with the Latin genitive of the constellation name, so the leading star in Centaurus is Alpha Centauri ("Alpha of Centaurus"). He often named a constellation's brightest star Alpha, then sorted the rest into brightness classes and assigned letters within each class in order from the head to the feet of the traditional constellation figure.īayer's letters caught on immediately. ![]() In his beautiful star atlas, Uranometria, Bayer identified many stars in each constellation with lower-case Greek letters. More tractable is the Greek-letter system introduced by the German astronomer Johann Bayer in 1603. Every astronomer knows what you mean by Sirius or Polaris, but not one in 100 could identify Pishpai (Mu Geminorum), Alsciaukat (31 Lyncis), Dhur (Delta Leonis), or Zujj al Nushshabah (Gamma Sagittarii). The Bright Star Catalogue, 5th edition, lists more than 800 star names. Moreover, there are simply too many proper names to ever remember. It simply means "tail," a body part that a lot of constellations possess. But the same name has also been bestowed, at some time, on at least five other stars. ![]() "Deneb" to most people interested in astronomy means the brightest star in Cygnus. Star names are poetic and embody old constellation lore (usually in garbled Arabic), but confusion runs wild. But today proper names are widely used only for the brightest few dozen stars - and it's a good thing. Since ancient times stars, like people, have had their own proper names, such as Vega or Deneb. Another article covers the nomenclature of deep-sky objects. In this article ,we'll cover those most often encountered for star names, with their meanings and histories. Celestial nomenclature is too freakish for that, too full of schemes from times long past.įortunately, a well-rounded amateur needs to know only a tiny fraction of these naming systems. Its editors despaired of the list ever being made orderly, reasonable, or complete. The First Dictionary of the Nomenclature of Celestial Objects, 1983, described well over 1,000 different naming systems then in use, mostly for faint objects studied by professionals. Here is the constellation Taurus from Bayer's Uranometria atlas of 1603.Īt least beginners aren't alone in their confusion of star names. ![]() Johann Bayer was the first to use Greek letters for star names - and four centuries later, we use them still.

The Zoom H1 was very susceptible to handling noise so hand holding this recorder is not really advised for critical audio work. I would suggest setting the H1 audio levels manually and then switching over to Auto level as a bit of extra protection from unexpected noises coming on to the scene. This shows that the Auto Level control really does work as it should and is a great little feature to have. I then switched, mid-play to Auto Level and the peaking lights went off. If I had recorded this, clear distortion would have occurred in the recording. Turning up the speakers in my editing bay as the Beatles blasted out 'Get Back', I set the manual levels control so that the peaking light was practically full on. The Auto Levels switch is designed to circumnavigate the manual levels control and prevent inadvertent peaking from occurring. However, the H1 also has an 'Auto Levels' switch which I decided to test. Adjusting record levels is simply accomplished by pressing on the input level + or - switch on the recorder's right side. Monitoring any recording is an absolute necessity, and I strongly urge you to monitor all audio, no matter what recorder or microphone you may be using.Ī 'Record Peak' light is a very welcome addition warning you when you might have your recording levels set too high. Instead the 1/8-inch stereo line output does a fine job with your headphones or ear buds. This is probably best as you shouldn't monitor any recording with an internal speaker. ![]() The high end of the H1 was quite good though transients seemed sharper on the H4n.Ī small reference speaker comes as part of the H1 but even at its highest volume level of 100 you practically have to hold it up to your ear to hear. In both cases, the recorders were placed at the same distance from the drums themselves. The microphones are a bit smaller than the H4n's and while the Zoom H1 can also record at 96khz/48khz and 44.1khz at either 16 or 24 bit, the recording on the Zoom H1 was a bit muddier on the bottom end as I listened to myself on the drums and compared it to a similar recording done on the H4n. With the microphone centered in front of my television, I walked from the left side of the room to center to right and when the recording was ingested in the Mac Pro, my panning voice was clearly denoted moving from left to right with the television's audio clearly centered between the 2 speakers. In tests, I found the stereo separation to be excellent. Like its bigger brother, the Zoom H1 uses a stereo X/Y mic configuration and several features that really impressed. At the least, I would advise purchasing the USB cable, which can also power the Zoom H1, but is necessary for downloading your recordings to your computer and the windscreen. The USB cable, AC adaptor, windscreen and various other options are just that, optional. The Zoom H1 comes supplied with a 2 GB micro SD card, a AA battery, which can power the H1 for up to 10 hours, and pamphlet manual so you are ready to record as soon as you open the box. Recently produced, the Zoom H1, for the entry level shooter, does a very credible job of recording narration or music in stereo mode. ![]() For those filming with the newer DSLRs on the market that provide high quality HD video on top of their photo capabilities, the need for a good microphone or recording device like the Zoom H1 is mandatory. And yet, too many do just that and put aside audio concerns until it is too late. ![]() Quality audio is one part of the editing equation that no one should forget. I guess I'll just be using amps without cabs as default and in the end see if I can improve it in the mix in anyway with cabs. ![]() I'm not using this for live applications, just to record bass in my own tracks I'm producing at home. I'm really trying to avoid using IR's or separate cab models because of the 6 block limit. Would be nice to have an option when using the stock cabs or amps+cabs to mix in direct sound like you can do with IRs, maybe that way I could add just a little bit of that cab air without losing punch and tightness. Yes, for what I know it's the most common even if mic'ing a cab to mix it with DI, I guess that's for the same issues I'm describing. Hell, I strongly advise you watch ALL of his videos even if you skip stock cabs and go with IRs. If you're interested in learning how to do it, check out the video below to start. You have to learn how to tweak it all so that it gets the sound you're looking for. I also like all of the options stock cabs bring, but at first it is overwhelming. Especially with the Stomp, which has a minimum of blocks, I like that I can have an amp and cab in one block. Even I have to admit, if you are creating a tone and you want to have the amp part finished in under 30 seconds, quickly grabbing one of your fave IRs is pretty powerful and fast. WIth IRs, they are already practically completed, there's really not a lot of need to dial them in any further except maybe for some high or low cuts or perhaps some volume enhancements. Many people (I'd say "most" based on what I read) prefer IRs to the cab models. On the subject of IRs - I would try them before you think it'll be the same deal as dialing in the stock cabs. At least in my experience, perhaps you might get solid sounds with no cab at low volumes, but if you were to pump them to performance levels I think you'd find that un toned down amp sound would suddenly sound screechy and ear drum deafening. ![]() It adds that final flavor that brings it down to reality. To some degree that's exactly what a cab does. ![]()
